I have tried rooting my Motorola Atrix 2 (ICS 4.0.4) by a few different methods (xda, androidplaza, etc.) even though they all seem to be a variant of the same root method. NONE have worked. This method produced these results:

Connect device to begin!Device connected.[*] Performing exploit... (thanks Dan Rosenberg!)

failed to copy 'motofail' to '/data/local/motofail': Permission denied
Unable to chmod /data/local/motofail: No such file or directory

rm failed for /data/local/motofail, No such file or directory
rm failed for /data/local/tmp/*, No such file or directory[*] Done. Rebooting device...[*] Done.

If all went well well your Atrix 2 should be rooted!
Thanks for using, and enjoy root!

    Press any key to exit.

After this I checked for root using the free app: Root Checker Basic which told me: "Sorry! This device does not have proper root access."

My phone has USB Debugging and Unknown Sources enabled. I was connected as Camera (PTP) during the attempt.

Below is a screen cap of my dxdiag info:

Please someone help me. I am dying to flash the CM port for the Moto A2.

Please tell me if you need more info.

    Thanks a million

EDIT: I forgot to mention: I have the latest Motorola drivers installed.

    Question

I know this thread is old, but I just tried following its instructions and can't get past the first command.

I've done everything I can do from post #1. Here's something I cannot do:

Before you can root your Atrix 2, you must first have the correct drivers installed. You can find the Motorola drivers here (download the drivers with MotoHelper, not the PC Charging Drivers).
I followed the link, but its only files were for windows and Mac--I only use Linux.

Once you install the proper drivers, make sure that USB Debugging is enabled on your Atrix 2: Go to Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging.
I already had USB Debugging enabled.

    Under 'Manual Root' I've done:

    Manual Root
If you are on Linux or a Mac then you will need to root your A2 manually. Follow these directions to manually root your A2 (they will also work on Windows):
    • Have the Android SDK installed
    • Download and extract this zip: Manual Files.zip
    • Move all of its files to the "platform-tools" folder of where you have the SDK installed
    • Open up a command prompt or terminal"cd" to the "platform-tools" folder of where you have the SDK installed. (i.e. if you're on Windows and it's installed in C:\sdk the command would be "cd C:\sdk\platform-tools")
    • Now type the following commands:

    Code:

    adb push motofail /data/local/motofail
and this is as far as I can go; it fails with this error message:

    Code:
./adb push motofail /data/local failed to copy 'motofail' to '/data/local/motofail': Permission denied
Any help/guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately you need to use either a Windows or Mac.

Then why does post #1 say: "If you are on Linux or a Mac then you will need to root your A2 manually. Follow these directions to manually root your A2 (they will also work on Windows):"?
