    ATT/TMo merger discussion

Looks like AT&T is well on its way to having a monopoly in the wireless communications business! Today, AT&T purchased T-Mobile for a cool $39 Billion dollars in cash and stocks.

There is already a lot of hate coming from T-Mobile subscribers, who really enjoy their unlimited data and free tethering, and think that AT&T will bring an end to that. Of course, they're probably right. Thoughts?

AT&T Buying T-Mobile USA: How Will It Affect Us?

So now all GSM providers in the US will be under one ownership. How will the lack of competition affect pricing? Further, how will the different UMTS bands (read: 3G frequency) limit any boost in network coverage?

    Thoughts, opinions, rants? Floor's open...

Check the link I posted in the thread right before this one. It seems pretty legitimate... there is a press release and everything.

The agreement is confirmed, pending approval. But keep in mind, they already did when they allowed AT&T to purchase Cingular. They may decide to block it, but the fact that T-Mobile USA has been in financial trouble for a while may play a big role in that decision. The fact that both companies are GSM may be another: if AT&T can make a strong argument that this acquisition will allow them to create a top-level infrastructure without raising prices, it would be pretty hard to say no.

All the talk was that Sprint was working on a deal for T-mobile, guess that didn't work out.

Wouldn't have made no sense. That's like Nokia going with Windows Phone: one dying company isn't going to save another. Now AT&T buying up a crapload of GSM towers with HSPA+ backhaul in place? That's gonna help. The big issue is how the different frequencies will affect the merge. Can a tower broadcast in both frequencies simultaneously? AT&T certainly can't just switch them over, because every T-Mo phone would suddenly lose 3G. Dilemmas...
