Apple's older iPhones get upgrades, but they increasingly can't use many of the features of the latest models. You aren't getting a full upgrade there. The Blackberry doesn't do nearly a tenth of what Android and iOS phones can do, so there's no comparison there. And, just to throw this in, ask Windows Phone 7 users how they feel about being locked out of Windows Phone 8.

Which is pretty much the same condition as your Apple and Blackberry examples. Ubuntu is far from the mainstream as far as OSes go, and Linux was designed from the get-go to run well on limited hardware platforms.

With all due respect, you'd be well advised to face the fact that this is the situation in the Android world. You can either understand and live with it, or you can go to another platform, like maybe Apple or Blackberry.
    Martin's Android devices:
    - Samsung Galaxy S3 with Quantum (CM 10.2 by PwnCakes193)
    - Asus Transformer TF101 with No-Name (CM 10.2 by josteink)
    - Motorola Atrix 4G with CM 7.2

I'm going to have to go with MJ and Monsta.

Realistically there is no way, even the Nexus 4, any specific device will be able to handle 'every' update moving forward. Eventually, it will go the way of the Atrix and meet its update end, which is okay in my book.

No phone should go the way of the Atrix. At least the way it did.

Seriously though, I have to agree, to a certain extent. It is inevitable at some point. That said, as long as there are Devs and a core group of people to keep a phone alive, there is still life there. Take the Atrix for example. There are some very talented Devs working some pretty cool magic to bring us CM10 ROM's. I think that is the cool thing about Android compared to any other mobile OS.

That's true. Someone, somewhere is still developing for the Atrix.

I hope someone somewhere is trying to get my bootloader unlocked.

(sorry, I have a daily need to complain about my locked bootloader)

Right now some devs are trying to make an Atrixfied version of the Xoom kernel which will extend the phone's life a little more!

Yes I hope that works out. It would be great to see a proper kernel, especially with the leak ROM's
