Do you need the multimedia dock?

I have read conflicting reports all over the web regarding the multimedia dock vs. plugging the Atrix directly in to an hdtv via the hdmi cable.

I understand the dock charges and provides extra usb ports. But is it required to get the full webtop experience?

In other words, can you get the firefox browser if you plug the Atrix directly into your hdtv via the hdmi cable?

Yes, You can get the webtop experience just by plugging HDMI cable to your TV, and to top it off you can use yoru Atrix as a touchpad(no mouse needed) and with a bluetooth keyboard have a desktop like experience web browsing.

I'll see if I can can find the videos that shows the different connection types.
"The best analogy I can tell you is; The Atrix is like a race car, it will take you a few days to customize it, but once you do, it's like nothing you've ever driven before." -FlexRated

So, does this mean you plug your phone into your TV, they are going to know you're using the firefox browser, and start charging you?

The only time they will charge tethering is when using the lapdock... When even that is debated.

Well my skepticism is coming from the fact they said, when ever we use the firefox browser, it's charging us the tethering fee. But more likely than so, they can't see that we're using it. And it's covered under my unlimited data

I speficially asked this and have in writing this is not the case. I have a thread with the emails posted from an AT&T store manager, and a Motorola Rep.

Engadget says you get the same experience with an hdmi cable plugged directly into an hdtv:

    Motorola Atrix 4G review -- Engadget#

"We're not sure we really see a huge market for this dock, unfortunately. There are much better ways to get your content onto a television screen,
and in fact you can simply plug an HDMI cable into the phone and use the same features that the dock provides."

pcmag says you only get the full webtop experience with the dock:

    Motorola Atrix 4G (AT&T) Review & Rating | PCMag.com

"Here's what's exciting: Used with the dock (and only with the dock), the phone kicks into Webtop mode and you're surfing the Web on the big screen,
hitting all of those desktop Flash sites to stream videos and such."

Well these two articles seem kind of contradicting, don't they?

You have to purchase the tethering package to subsidize the lower price of getting the
laptop with a contract. But you are not tethering anything.

It's not like tethering to a regular laptop where the phone becomes a modem.
The Atrix laptop is nothing more than a screen
    and keyboard.
