most reviews i've read and a few people i know that actually purchased all agree the laptop dock is not worth it. It is way overpriced for what it is. As you stated also, a netbook would be a better option.
This is a discussion on Lapdock worth it? within the Motorola Atrix Accessories forums, part of the Motorola Atrix Forum category; From what I've seen the Atrix lapdock is quite expensive (429$). Is it worth it? without the Atrix the lapdock is just an empty shell. ...
From what I've seen the Atrix lapdock is quite expensive (429$). Is it worth it? without the Atrix the lapdock is just an empty shell. A netbook would be way cheaper and is a fully capable computer. Wouldn't that make more sense instead of buying the lapdock with the limitations of a smartphone and from what we've seen in presentations a quite laggy performance when watching a flash video?

Yup, what she said. It's cool to show off what your phone can do, etc., but functionality could have been increased. With the Webtop hack you can use the standard HDMI cable that comes with the phone to hook up to any HDMI display and have the same functions. As chunli stated, if you're looking for portability, netbook/Atrix wifi tether would work much better, IMO.
Yup :P
The HDMI hack is really cool too, because you can just use the HDMI cable provided with the phone, and play on your tv!
It's a little laggy or glitchy at times, but none the less, definitely cool.
If you're going to drop that kind of money on the dock, I'd look into a tablet. Or just a standard laptop.

As an owner of a Atrix and Laptop dock I would say if you would find a netbook useful in your day. Then the Laptop dock is a good replacement for that netbook. For me sitting surfing the internet reading and responding to email via the laptop dock is great. If you spend some time playing with it you will see Motorola has done a great job integrated the phone and laptop experience together. As an example, opening a link in a email from your phone gives you the choice to open the webpage in the browser on the phone or laptop dock. Some reviewers were expecting full laptop performance which considering a smartphone is powering it was a bit unrealistic, but that's my opinion.
Let me put it this way I use my Laptop dock more than my Xoom, but that's just me.
At&t said they would give me the lapdoc for $200. Should I get it? Is it worth it?
If that is with no strings attached, then I probably would. But, if they're going to require that tethering plan or something like that be added to your plan then I would pass. Let me know if you're able to do it, I might try to do the same if it's a straight deal.

For $200. 00, you're getting into a more rational price range. I might be tempted, for that price.

Well if you didn't like it, someone would buy it. In the future it will be more useful as phones are upgraded, then the whole system is upgraded, assuming they keep the dock the same.
