Good move, Conspiracy. I'm still amazed at how many people continue to think task killers are good...

Glad I finally read this post. When I had my org DROID I believe task killers helped so as soon as I got this I installed it again. And I too use it way too often but now I know better and can save that space on my memory

This is good info...I have only had my Atrix for six days and the one app i was told to get and use was ATk and I have been using it more often then I use the display on the phone lol. I just uninstalled it as I did not understand Android. Ill let it do its thing and use the task manger installed on it for now. I don't have many apps other then what was pre-installed so ATK was prob kind of pointless anyhow.

I would have to say that real-world experience flies directly in the face of this advice. For the first 3+ months that I used my Atrix 4G i refused to used a task-killer. And, I stuggled with battery life, often getting only 3-6 hours on a fully overnight charge. With use of a task-killer for the last ~45 days, my battery life is consistently 12-15 hours and sometimes closer to two days.

I can't speak for anyone else, but the comments about memory usage etc make perfect sense - but then I've been a *nix guy for 20 years or more. However I strongly believe that the improved battery life in my instance when using a task-killer comes from killing apps that are unnecessarily using data services. The Motorola services for this are especially egregious: for instance I do not have any social-networking apps installed, not have I configured any in the Moto widget, but yet the 'Social Networking' app is pretty much always running in teh task-list except when my task-killer kills it. Why? God only knows. Email apps are also hogs -- I was trialing and comparing multiple Exchange-mail clients, and my battery power was being consumed at tremenous rate with several running all accessing the same mail during my 1-2 week trial period. I finally settled on the Touchdown client, but still my battery was heavily consumed. In the end I went back to the Motorola email client, and used the most conservative settings for mail access possible, and almost immediately got a 30% boost in battery life.

Bottom line -- kill tasks/apps/etc not to 'free memory', but to prevent unnecessary data usage - that is what apparently sucks battery power most egregiously.

    Just my opinion and experience.

I'm interested in what gocomoto said, because data transfer, not battery life, is the primary reason I want apps done when I am done with them. I'm a PC user. When I want 'privacy', when I don't want info going to a website, or don't want a website sending me info, I will close that tab and we're done. For my phone, on which I don't have unlimited data, I can't find any toggle button for apps like fb or my email to connect/disconnect. I installed one for my data connection, but I want one for individual apps, if Android doesn't want me shutting down the app completely. It's like having to completely open the floodgates of a dam, or having them completely closed. Let me decide who gets to talk to my phone, please.
