"Plan B" led the police straight to my stolen phone!

So, my wife and I were feeding the homeless in a church last Saturday night and she laid her brand new Atrix 4G down on a table in the foyer. 10 minutes later it was gone. I had NO IDEA what to do and immediately thought the phone was lost forever. Because the phone was so new I hadn't yet established any type of security apps on the device. I wasn't sure what was possible but when I got home I searched the Market and found "Plan B" by Lookout Mobile Security (market link). I remotely installed it from the browser and hoped for the best. Boy, am I glad I did!

You see, Plan B can be remotely installed to you device like any other app using http://market.android.com. Once installed it automatically opens in the background and immediately starts sending location information to the email address associated with the account. You can then request updated location information every 10 minutes by simply sending an SMS to the phone with the message "locate"

In my case, the phone had little to no charge when it was stolen so the thief had to buy a charger. I got a notification as soon as he turned it on. I knew where he was within a few hundred feet. He must have turned the phone off because I lost him until the next morning when I pinpointed his location at a bus stop across town. I was able to call the police and put them on standby until I could confirm his final location.

He settled down, after a tram ride, in a soup kitchen for lunch. I contacted them and an officer onsite helped me track down the perp. We were able to use the maps in conjunction with a call log I downloaded using another app (see below). The officer was AMAZED. He was able to question the suspect on his whereabouts that morning and the night before. The thief confessed. I have the phone back. Plan B FTW!

If you or anyone you know is ever put in this situation just remember, there's always a "Plan B"!

    Other Notes:

There are other apps like Plan B that I tried during the search. None of them functioned as efficiently for simply pinpointing the location of my phone. However, I will give an honorable mention to "Android Lost" (market link). I was able to use it to pull a phone report that included all recent SMS's and calls. The overall app is functional but lacks the simplicity and polish of Plan B. That being said, I do recommend it.

Wow what a story. Sorry you had to go through that but good to hear how well it works. Hope you never need it again.

You should send your story to the developers. Bet they would love to hear how well it works.

You're right! I may do that. It is, after all, free. It's the least I can do.

Yeah, it would make a great testimonial. I'm also glad that things worked out for you, Nalrac!

I'm glad the police took you seriously! When this happened to my wife they just laughed at me and said GPS isn't accurate enough to get a reading within 7 meters.

It does work great though! I'll agree to that!

Absolutely! It was a huge deal to have a real authority "on the scene" that was willing to listen to me. Without that...no dice.

Great story. Convinced me to dump Dr. Web in favor of Lookout.
Will definitely remember Plan B, just in case.

Good move! In these cases it's reliability that matters the most. That's why I couldn't highly recommend "Android Lost". Although the feature set was awesome, it just didn't work as reliably as plan b. Thanks for the comment!
