It may be fiber going to the base of the tower, and I could be wrong, but its all copper going up. Or are they waveguides?? Honestly, I don't know. If I had to wager a guess, I think it's 7/8" LMR going to the antennas. I really should know this. We have two sites where we are colocated with ATT.

Very interesting... I'm going to come back in a couple years and read this again and hopefully it'll make more sense . However I'm 13 so I'm surprised I understood as much as I did!

But could you please just briefly describe all the different categories of 3G? You kind of lost after reading "UMTS, W-CDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA+, CDMA2000, LTE"

Seems like 4g LTE is a matter of having the proper hardware installed on the tower.. speaking of 4G I went to att and bad then put a 4G similar card in my phone... haven't noticed a huge difference, but in my hometown I am getting 5mbps download and over 1mbps upload.

Usually, tower backhaul is GigE. Only in the new LTE sites is it fiber. GigE is a lot faster than people would think, especially with enterprise class routers and switches... they can seriously push some bits over copper.

Actually, in most places major carriers run hardline from BSS to transceivers/antennas. Flexible Hardline is some serious stuff. Here's a cross section of one...

Most places have at least 100+ customers that are considered business customers that require mission critical QoS, and this is one of the best ways to ensure that it's never the cabling's fault if the network is down or having issues. Actually, in metro areas, AT&T uses gas charged hardlines. They're shielded from EM and electrostatic, almost completely.

I have updated the post with a little more useful information on GSM/GPRS/EDGE/3G.

Hopefully I will get a chance tomorrow to finish up with a little more specific information about HSPA/HSPA+, LTE and Advanced LTE.
