This is my current set. PDP X7, all maple, lacquer finish (I hate wrapped drums). For an inexpensive set they sound phenomenal.

My dad has a Ludwig set from the early 70's that are made of stainless steel. They sound terrible but so cool lol

These are bottom line Ludwig. But to my surprise were I got them, they are the top of the bottom. The custom elite series came in different versions that ranged from the custom (really cheap looking with two trees for the toms instead of one, to the custom elite cs which is what I got. The set sold for a little over $1000 for the drums and stand included.

I was lucky enough to get this bad boys for $500 when Musicians Friend sold them as used/damage. But when they got home I inspected then throughly and could not find a single thing wrong with them. The heads where slightly used, that was it. Which led me to believe this was a floor model, but the paint and the maple wood are in excellent condition.

One thing I've noticed about Ludwig is that even their low end kits are great quality, I can't say that for Pearl or Tama. DW makes an amazing kit (they also make the PDP set I have) as well as Mapex. Yamaha has the best studio kit in my opinion, their only rival would be Grestch who I believe makes the best drums money can buy so long as one doesn't buy the Catalina series. Two companies that I wish were still in business are Rogers and Slingerland, both of which made drums that still to this day are unparalleled in quality and sound.

Did you take the heads and rings off and check the bearing edges? If there's any damage at all it'll greatly affect the sound quality.

I replaced the heads and checked everything with a microscope. I even ha one of my buds who is a professional recording artist inspect it for anything out of place and he was shocked that the was nothing wrong at all. I did replace the hi-hat stand and bass drum peal with pearl because I like the feel of it better. Not to say that the stands it came with were cheap because they were not. The difference between this and the top end Lugs is that the Custom series where made in china but with Ludwig high standards. Every time I take this out people complement me on them, they have a really nice warm sound.
