Without a dock or any mods, the hdmi just works as a gallery viewer. So you could download a youtube video and watch it.

I have much experience with unlocked bootloaders and custom ROMs on the original ATRIX. I will do my best to hold your hand through any problem, small or large, on any phone. Please open up a thread in the help section (or Rescue Squad section if your phone is in dire need) or PM me. I don't bite
There working on it right now hopefully they'll be a better mod soon
SENT FROM AN ATRIX THAT ATE STEVE JOBS
So if I put a 720p mp4 on my phone it should play?
so, you cannot play anything real time? it would have to be from a file on the phone then.
how are they coming on the movie apps? those would be able to be viewed on the hdmi out?
Theoretically, yes, but it can depend on the encoding.
Not currently, at least not without modding the phone to allow the Webtop over HDMI without a HD Dock. The other mod he was referring to was the HDMI mirroring. Hopefully that gets done soon as that's one of the biggest native things that the Atrix lacks.
Do we know if Motorola is actually working on that? I know it's at the top of everyone's wishlist and I've been told that Motorola is aware of it... I guess the question is: Are they actually planning on doing it or do they have no intention to do it (legal issues or something)?

I have been trying to watch that topic on the Moto Support Forums, but I haven't seen any positive official responses. I don't think we will see it from Moto anytime soon, if at all. I think they want you to rely on the Webtop and thus the docks.
That's only my speculation, though.
My understanding is that it doesn't work exactly like HDMI mirroring would even with the docks. Is that a misunderstanding?

The docks only offer an emulated view of sorts of your phone screen inside the Webtop environment. So, even through Webtop it not a full mirroring, especially since you cannot view the same image on the screen of the device making it impossibly to play touch-screen games that way.
