[HOWTO] Easy Root 1.5.7 using GingerBreak - xda-developers

In the first post is an .exe that kennethpen created. You run that tool on your computer and it will root your phone for you, without having to mess with adb. Unfortunately I cant test if this works because I dont have a windows pc where I am right now. But tomorrow I'll definitely run the tool.

    Mod Edit: Fixed title.

    Nice find! Thanks!

I might have to figure out a way to try this out.

Edit: BACKUP BOTH YOUR INTERNAL STORAGE and EXTERNAL SD! This exploit uses your external SD and has been reported to wipe your SD contents, some reports say it wipes your internal too. Be careful!!

Edit 2: If you use this method to root you will need to use GladEnabler to get sideloading if you did not already have it left over from before the update: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1017373

Yeah I'll be trying it out tomorrow when I get home. All I've got on my external sd is my music, so I'll back that up beforehand.

Great find. Guess I won't have an excuse anymore for not being rooted. Thanks.

The. Exe file is not running on my PC. Does it open up a seperate screen when you click it? The only thing I see is an hour glass and it goes away

Awesome! Has anyone tried it? Does it really erase things? or the entire sd card?

I don't know if anyone here has tried it with success, but I've seen quite a few on XDA report success.

It isn't supposed to format the SD, but it has been known to by mistake. It's the exploit that writes to the SD (that's why an external SD is required) while back-ending the /system and in the process can overwrite what's already on the SD unintentionally.

Edit: it looks like it's more likely to wipe your internal storage. I would be safe and back both of them up.

I'm already rooted and haven't been able try this yet. You might be the first member of these forums to try it, so I don't know if anyone else might have this answer yet.

What OS are you running? If in Vista/7 have you tried running as Admin?

I do have windows 7. I didn't try running as an admin. What would this do? The file downloaded and the shortcut was there but it wouldn't open. It just did nothing. I ended up sideloading the gingerbreak .apk file to my phone and running it from their. Worked like a charm!

Sweet! Glad it worked! We have a confirmed install! Yay! I'm not excited or anything...

Some executable and batch files have to be run as Administrator for the to be allowed to function correctly by Windows due to the built in security.
