Does my phone have to be activated with ATT before rooting? I need to unlock it to use with Tmobile, but I am a bit confused with what order I need to proceed. When I first turn on the phone it insists I register with Motoblur.
Any way to by pass Motoblur?
Root before or after unlocking?
I think I'd 1- make a thread completely dedicated to your question (mods, help here?)

YES you will have to use MOTOBLUR! Do what they tell you in the video. Doesn't seem too hard. I assume after that you can root it. You do need a SIM in there to get to the root process, so yeah, unlock, motoblur and root.

I'm hoping to get, and unlock, an Orange Motorola Atrix. On the Orange website, it says that phones can't be locked until they have been registered/active for three months. Is this correct whatever, or only if you unlock via Orange?

That should only apply to unlocking via Orange. You should still be able to purchase an unlock code from a third party service like cellunlock.net. They seem to have the best success rate reported by Atrix users thus far. I have also heard of a 50% off code floating around the net somewhere.
