    Factory Reset and then Root?

    Hi all,

    Can't remember what I protocol I followed to root my phone (aRoot maybe), but after system update in April, WirelessTether now reports that I no longer have root privileges.

    Is there a Factory Reset that I can apply to get back to the starting state, so I can then start from scratch and root again? I assume that the rooting guides expect your phone to be in some initial condition.

    Thanks in advance,
    m

    The dangers of accepting an OTA update include the almost guaranteed UN-rooting of your rooted phone. It is possible that whichever update you accepted closed the loophole which the program you used to root exploited to achieve root, so you may not be able to re-root immediately. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but OTA updates are usually designed to (along with updating the system) close any loopholes known to exist - and if we are aware of them, you can be assured that Motorola is aware of them, and will have probably created a way to close that loophole.

    If you want to get back root access, you currently have two choices...

    1. GladRoot - you'll have to flash back to 4.1.26 (instructions in linked thread), root, update, reroot using the supplied "morning-after pill"

    2. GingerBreak - you can stay on 4.1.83 and reroot, but your file system might get a little messy. You can always flash a fresh 4.1.83 and then use GingerBreak.

    Thank you both.

    When I have a few hours to read through the docs on GladRoot and GingerBreak, I'll review my options.

    And I'll be sure to refuse OTA updates from here on out.

    Welcome. =)

    Good luck!

    P. S. Once you're rooted you can freeze the updater so it won't keep bugging you.
