Bootloaders: What Are They and Why Unlock Them?

Android Central has posted a pretty good article on explaining bootloaders: what they are, what they do, why so many people want them unlocked and why carriers and OEMs don't.

If you're interested in this sort of stuff and have a few minutes to read I would recommend a trip to the Source Link below.

Lol! No doubt! They're one of the remaining big guns that hasn't stepped up with a decision yet.

Well its not even about them making a decision. HTC, samsung, Sony, lg all have been coy about their intentions. But they don't go out of their way to make it impossible. Using the efuse first in the X and now in almost every device is going out if their way. All the other manufacturers have locked bootloaders but they are unencrypted for easy hacking. Seems like the harder they make things, the more bricked devices they have to deal with.

Well, that's true, though most of the rest have begun to listen to the minority and offer developer (hacker) friendly solutions. I would think, though, the more unlocked the phones are the more serious damage can be done at the low level.

You can't brick a HTC phone. Put the ruu file on your sd, boot up, and hours back to stock. Motorola phones are extremely difficult to brick as long as SBF files are floating around. The carriers have the final say so on whether the phones they sell need to be locked or not.

The main issue is tethering without an additional hotspot data plan. Abusers of this put the hacking community in a bad light so carriers are just tying to protect their services.
