[ROOT] 2.3.4 using fastboot
Mod-Edit: 9/7/2011 - WARNING: This will install AT&T files into your phone's /preinstall folder which will effect future updates if you are on another carrier besides AT&T. Proceed at your own risk.
Gotta love the devs over at XDA.
1) Download the preinstall.img file here. (Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!)
2) Put preinstall.img wherever. I put it in C: in a folder called "moto-fastboot". You'll need to know where it is.
3) Put phone in fastboot (Hold power button and volume down button, fastboot pops up, press volume up button)
4) Open up command prompt (start > run > cmd)
5) Go to where you put preinstall.img (cd C:\moto-fastboot)
6) type in: moto-fastboot flash preinstall preinstall.img
7) moto-fastboot reboot
8) Download superuser & terminal emulator from the market
9) Open up terminal emulator and type in the following:
Code:
/preinstall/su
/bin/mount -o remount,rw /system
cp /preinstall/su /system/bin/
PATH=/system/bin:$PATH pm install /preinstall/Superuser.apk
If /preinstall/su doesn't work try "dosu" instead of "su"
The last step is optional if you already have Superuser from step 8.
I got this all from >>HERE<<

If you're already rooted, and have the unlocked bootloader, what would be the effect of installing this? Would it be a case of "you simply pick up 2.3.4" - or would it cause problems with the previous rooting and unlocking? I'm not really planning on installing this, but I was just curious.

This should only be needed if you installed the 2.3.4 ROM, since the install probably unrooted you. If you just unlocked, and you were already rooted, then you don't need this.
Installing the 2.3.4 files unroots you just like most any update or SBF flash will, it overwrites the root files.

Gotcha - and thanks buddy!

Link to download does not seem to be working... can someone post an alternate location?
Assuming this does not erase/change anything already on the device other than root access. Can you confirm, please? Thanks!

I installed OTA 2.3.4. I was previously rooted but now am not. I haven't installed any roms or unlocked boot loader. In order to just root my phone, should I use these instructiones or the ones provided by "das8nt" at the following link:
http://www.atrixforums.com/forum/mot...d-2-3-4-a.html
Just wanna make sure I use the right ones to unlock my phone.
Thx.

They should both work.. they're essentially the same thing, one just uses ADB and one uses the Terminal on the phone.
The guide I posted is actually based off of the original work linked here, it's just evolved a bit over time.
