    Time for a Change

    Good morning folks!

So last weekend I stupidly hit the "Update now" instead of "Update later" when offered an AT&T GPS update for my Nottachtrix ROM'd, Bell Canada Atrix 4G. You guessed it - it got hosed and now immediately crashes right after boot.

So I thought: time for another ROM elimination round.

I'm looking hard at Grey.Mouser's new take on Nottachtrix, as it's served me well for a Blur-based ROM and I have all the docks, although I haven't used the lapdock more than twice in the last year.

Also, since I've been using Jelly Bean on my Nexus 7, I'm partial to the new interface and features that version of Android offers and Th3Bill's BeanStalk has caught my eye as well (seems they got the lapdock working on it too, and no bluetooth is not a deal breaker right now).

My choice hasn't been finalized yet, but I need to get my phone operational soon-ish. But if you have other recommendations or ideas, please feel free to share them here. I'm open-minded at this point.

Grey.Mousers take on Nottachtrix is really good. He's only made it better than when Nottach was working on it. The file is Huge at .9Gb, but that is made up of the rom, webtop, and the 2 versions of UbunTop. I have his latest installed right now and I can get about 1-2 days of battery life out of it. Since you have the lapdock, I would wrongly recommend going with UbunTop over webtop. It is faster and about 10,000% more functional.

This is just my opinion and as we say in the wet shaving world, your mileage may vary.

I downloaded the 2.1 version of Nottachtrix last night, to be honest, and will be hopefully trying that out tonight, but I'll be even more honester... honestlier... : Google Now is getting to be one of those essential tools for me.

We'll see how it goes, as battery life and the potential of having a functional, speedier webtop is looking mighty sexy too.

I mean "intellectually stimulating", not sexy.

Ah-ha. Who would use that adjective in regards to hardware?

    Right?

I am like you, I need bluetooth. I am currently running Epinter's CM10. It is very nice, very functional. He really refined the rom. It is not as feature packed as some, but it is extremely well done. I was previously running Superlite which is based on Epinters CM10. I really liked Superlite. It is basically a stripped down version of Epinters rom, and I would compare it to Neutrino for GB.

My phone is a rebooting machine (nothing to do with the rom's) and these two seem to do very well in minimizing the reboots.

Edit: Just saw the new version of Nottachtrix and I might have to try that out.

I installed Nottachtrix 2.1.0 last night, and it was a breeze. Nothing at all like the ordeal I went through when installing version 1.3.1. Turns out the allure of UbunTop was enough to win me over (for now).

Got it installed on the first try via ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0 (which I upgraded minutes ago to 5.8.1.8 "Touch").

The only minor slowdown was me installing the wrong version of gapps, but that was easily resolved and the phone has been nice and stable. I haven't tried UbunTop yet so can't comment on installing apps through Webtop2SD yet.

    Pros
    • Fingerprint reader is working again
    • Fast, smoother transitions
    • Seems like even better energy consumption than before. Will confirm.
    Cons:
    • Some menus and text areas are appearing as black text on a very dark grey backgrounds, as Lradke reported elsewhere. Unsure if this is because I specifically opted for "dark" look when picking options in Aroma

More comments as the testing continues.

    Pros
    • Energy use is confirmed improved, especially now that I've limited the max CPU speed to 1.2GHz instead of 1.3
    • Partitioned and used Webtop2SD to move UbunTop, and tested that it at least launched up. Firefox seemed unresponsive in the 5 min. I had to actually test anything. More on this later.

    Cons:
    • I seem to be unable to switch to lanscape mode with the MIUI and MK launchers. That's OK, I really disliked it (despite the unbelievable number of modifications it allowed) and replaced it with Smart Launcher Pro (current fav).
