    Atrix 4G unresponsive touch screen

    Hi there,

A couple weeks ago, my Atrix stopped accepting touch input in a vertical line roughly the width and position of the home button. Since then, it has worsened to about a third of the screen. Everything still displays fine, it just won't recognize input in that area. I've done the super basic stuff, restarting, battery out, but nothing more advanced than that because I don't really know what I'm doing with a phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Included is a rough view of the bad spot.

Yeah it's been dropped a few times, but it has no visible damage like the crack you described. Also, it first stopped working quite abruptly in the middle of a text I was writing, so it was not brought about by any particular impact.

I think my next step will probably be to open it up and make sure all the connectors are firmly seated, but I thought I'd gather some information first.

My phone was doing a similar thing(different area of the screen).I would call ATT(if thats where you got the phone) BEFORE you open it up. After a long conversation with a rep(had me do a factory reset etc.)they are replacing mine free even though it was out of warranty(only a couple of days). If not with ATT try Motorola, they offered to repair it free before ATT offered to replace it.

I agree with Bill; it's worth a try first.

It does sound like the digitizer ribbon connector is not seated properly, or is possibly damaged. I don't have a lot of experience with the inside of the phone, so that's just a theory.

This problem just started for me yesterday... This is a screenshot of a zig-zag drawing I did, not lifting my finger

Should I buy a new digitizer? Name: 1339825799839.jpg

Its worse for taping than sliding.

Luckily my buttons underneath the screen work...

Yeah, that may be in the cards. Before buying a new one, you might want to get some practice and go in and make sure everything is connected correctly. That center line is disturbed, but not by much.

I will bet you 100% that it is the digitizer. Buy a new one, but before you take it out of the packaging, disconnect and seat the old ribbon cable. Also check for tears in the ribbon cable. If it is torn, just set the old one again and try. Then you can send the digitizer back if it just needs to be reconnected.

Well being this my main phone, and also given that I don't live in the US... I'm a bit afraid of opening the phone and risking a bigger screw up...

The picture looks a lot better than what it actually is. The wiggly in the middle is non-responsive part, but when my finger slides fast, it register it as a fast jump, so it makes a short straight line.

Anyway I'm willing to by either a new digitizer for 60$ i just spot online.... or a new, unused Atrix 4G out of ebay very cheap, but it comes only the phone, battery and battery cover for 200$

but the last option leave me with a mostly-good-spare phone?

    Thanks das8nt and grenefroggie.

Yes, if you have the opportunity to take the last option, that's what I would do. That's what I have done. I picked up a second Atrix about six months ago and used it for 3 weeks while mine was shipped off for repairs. But, then I resold it after getting my original back. Having a backup is great if you can do it. You might even consider getting the new digitizer a little while down the road so you can work on it without worry.
