Well the bootloader on the D1 was unlocked. So custom kernels and true custom ROMs could be loaded. With a locked bootloader they can only modify the OTAs nothing from source.

Well the dual cores are only rated at 1Ghz as well. Just the two cores are more efficient. The TB is very fast and smooth from what I've seen.
