    Question Upcoming AT&T Software Update

My Atrix is rooted, with the upcoming software update(Motorola ATRIX 4G Users Due for a Software Update Soon, Says Soak Test Invites) will I have to un-root first to be able to receive the update?

I'm sure the update will remove root, but I'm interested in this update since it mentions including bug fixes and I'd love for that to fix my random reboots, so just wondering if being rooted would stop the OTA installation of this update?

    Thanks

Is your bootloader unlocked? Also, have you removed or frozen any apps?

My bootloader is still locked, I did remove the stock swype to make installing the beta swype easier. That was my main reason for rooting.

So I'd need to restore the stock swype then?

    Thanks for the quick reply.

The way OTA updates work is they look for certain things on your phone. If it appears to the update that everything is in it's right place, it proceeds to do the update. If something that it's looking for is missing, then it aborts the update and leaves things as they were. I'm not sure *exactly* what it's looking for, but I do know that a custom recovery or custom rom will cause it to abort, as will deleting some pre-installed software. I've never used Swype, so I can't tell you if replacing the pre-installed version with the latest version will cause it to abort, but if you have the original, I'd play it safe and put that back on the phone.

Thanks for the explanation, that makes sense. I'll give the update a try when it's available and if it fails I'll reinstall the stock swype and try again.

I can confirm that the update will fail..might as well go back to stock swype before trying. Swype is installed as a system app on the ATRIX and any modified system file will break the updater. You can be rooted before updating, but will lose root access after update (depending on what root method you used..superuser may still be installed on your phone).

I have much experience with unlocked bootloaders and custom ROMs on the original ATRIX. I will do my best to hold your hand through any problem, small or large, on any phone. Please open up a thread in the help section (or Rescue Squad section if your phone is in dire need) or PM me. I don't bite

It would have been better news had this update been to ICS. Since it's "only" a Gingerbread update... meh. I'll still be curious as to what this update changes/improves/breaks, though.

Where did you see these issues mentioned? I'd love to see release notes. I contacted a vendor after they updated their app about a month ago and I started having random reboots while using their app. Apparently, they had several reports from Atrix owners and took them to Motorola. They contacted me about a week before this update news broke saying that Motorola had replicated the reboots and had a fix for it. This was my first indication that another update might be forthcoming. I also suspect it will be just bug fixes in Gingerbread, not ICS, but I've not seen any kind of issues/fix list.

I thought we weren't allowed to talk about the soak test at all? Or did I miss something.
